The Knox County Election Commission announced Wednseday that nominating petitions are available for the May 4th primary election to fill the unexpired term for the Eighth School Board District. Like other county offices elected in 2010, the qualifying deadline for the Eighth School Board District will be February 18th at noon.
School Board races are non-partisan. The two candidates receiving the most votes in the May 4th primary election will be on the August 5th county general election ballot. Should a candidate receive a majority of votes cast during the May 4th primary, that candidates name will appear alone on the August 5th ballot.

two residents pick up nominating petitions
Deborah Porter and Patrick J. Richmond both picked up nominating petitions on Friday.
Porter?
Is Deborah Porter the ex-wife of Gailen Porter, former Eighth District commission candidate?
That was her name, but it's a common first and last name...
Porter
I think it is the Deborah Porter that ran for the County Commission, District 2B seat in 2006 (could have been a different year). She did not get the 5% required votes in the republican primary and so was not on the ballot. At the time, she lived 2 houses from us but has since moved. She was also nominated for that seat on Black Wednesday by someone, to the seat that went to Bolus.
Here are some links I found:
http://www.volunteertv.com/home/headlines/5407761.html
http://knoxville.wate.com/node/52
http://web.knoxnews.com/news/charter_candidates/dwporter.pdf
I do not remember any children living in that house with her and her husband, but that is not a requirement for school board.
Deborah Porter
Deborah Porter is not related to Gailen Porter and has never been married to him Positive about it
Tommy Everett
Tommy Everett has picked up a nominating petition for School Board, District 8 on 2/1/2010.
all petitioners
My understanding is that at this point only Jacqueline Easterday, Deborah Porter, Patrick Richmond, Brad Canon, and Roy Mullins have "turned in" qualifying petitions to run. Can anyone verify this?
Also, I recently discovered that a Patrick Richmond used to teach at Northwest Middle School. Does anyone know if this is the same person running and if he is still currently employed by the system?
Also, is there any known info out there about anyone besides Mullins? The media keeps reporting on him and no one else. Give us some info so that we can vote with some kind of knowledge about these people before we end up with another situation like the one we just got out of.
Panel Discussion with Candidates for 8th District School Board
Would it be possible to arrange a panel discussion and question and answer session for the candidates for school board before the elections in May? I would love the chance to get to know them better myself as i also believe in an informed vote.
PTA Candidate Forum?
You might want to contact one of the stronger PTAs/PTOs among your Eighth District high schools, concerned, and ask if they would organize a Candidate Forum? The high school principals could likely give you contact info for their organizations' presidents (or legislative chairs, if they staff the position)?
I've hosted a couple at Powell High, in my community, and they weren't too difficult to pull off. The candidates are always receptive and several of our local news anchors are known to volunteer as moderators. I was fortunate to get retired WBIR anchor Bill Williams both times. He was excellent (and free).
Panel discussion with canidates for 8th district school board
There is an opportunity to meet the canadiates at the Candidate Expo 2010 March 25 from 4:30pm - 8:30pm. It is optional however I know that a few canadiates from the 8th district will be there.
As of the afternoon report
As of the afternoon report from yesterday, the following have picked up petitions but none have returned them:
Bradley Cannon,
Ralph Tommy Everett
Roy E. Mullins
Deborah Porter
Patrick J. Richmond
